China’s Street Style
Lately all the talk has been about China and America, competing neck in neck as the world’s new super powered economy. But economics aside, who is taking the cake in the fashion realm? This summer in China, tons of trends have been snatched up hot and straight fresh off the runway. It didn’t take long for their runway inspiration to turn into walkway fascination. I know my neck has snapped back and forth, taking double takes at all the new high-fashion styles being implemented into the average Chinese girl’s wardrobe.
Accordion skirts are making their mark on every girl’s summer wardrobe, and dare I say that it has been THE summer staple over in the orient. This look is inspired by accordion dresses and skirts from back in the 19th century! It can be modernized when paired with sheer blouses, crop tops, and bra-lets. Want to know the best part? They are summer-weather friendly! Whether maxi or mini, the sheer material gives you the class you want, and the cool you need–so breathable. They can go easily from street to work and from work to night. Simply swap out your blouse for a daring tank and your wedges for some pumps. Let’s hope this classic piece is here to stay for all seasons.
As if we didn’t get enough sheer from the accordion skirts, let’s add its cousin, the asymmetrical dress to the mixture. These lovely skirts show off your legs in the front and keep you covered in the back. Sexy, sassy, with a twinge of secrecy is this ensemble’s definition. Showing off your legs will be a breeze, literally. This fun take on the typical summer mini will have everyone screaming jealousy.
I’ve seen this trend on the streets in America, and it looks like bold girls around the globe are going for this fun DIY. The Chinese haven’t missed a beat of this drum and are taking this trend for all its worth. It seems like every girl is prancing around in her own homemade pair of jean cut-offs. You all know what I mean, the studs, the dip-dyes, the bleached out shorts. Perfectly suited to top off all these hardcore shorts, are sophisticated blouses. Opposites attract, at least this season.
If anyone knows how to make a timeless statement more modern, it’s the Chinese. I mean, they have been around longer than us Americans, according to the history books. Another summer classic is a contemporary stab at the “peter pan” shirt. Collars, collars, collars are everywhere! This fun trend has popped up at many boutiques and even the vendors on the side of the street are selling this fabulous fresh take on the average collar. Whether your collar is studded, covered in pearls, or neon, you can be sure that you’ll be noticed. Take your old blouses from chic to daring by DIY, or crashing your favorite thrift store or boutique.
There are loads of trends hitting the streets, but anything croqueted this summer will be the icing on the cake to save you from a morning wardrobe malfunction. Do you have a maxi dress that isn’t doing you any fashion favors? Throw a croquet crop top over it. Are your DIY shorts looking bland with your basic T-shirt? Throw a croquet top on top and tuck it in to your high-waisted shorts for a classy-meets-edgy look. This look is even great solo, dawn this trend simply, just as a dress. The summer’s motto should be a modified version of the classic Beyoncé lyrics, “If you’ve got it, then you should put a croquet top on it.”
So with that said, come on American Ladies – let’s show our competitors up by stealing a few of these trends and making them homegrown and country-fed. But seriously, let’s grab our old 80’s jeans (or borrow your mom’s), and get the studs, dip-dyes and sequins out. It’s time for us to get our head in the game and make our unique mark on these fresh scorching street summer trends.
